Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best Aftermarket Nes and Snes Consoles
Selecting the right retro console depends on your priorities like game access, build quality, and budget. This guide outlines the key factors to consider before making a purchase.
Game Access Method
Decide whether you want pre-loaded games or the ability to play physical cartridges. Mini systems often come with thousands of built-in titles for variety. Cartridge players let you use your own physical collection for authenticity and reliability.
Check if the device supports ROMs on external storage or just internal memory to match your needs.
Video Output Compatibility
Ensure the console supports HDMI for modern TVs or AV cables for older displays. Many budget consoles use standard HDMI which makes setup easier and cleaner. If you have an older TV, verify AV support before buying to avoid extra adapters.
Modern HDMI output usually provides a clearer image and avoids signal conversion issues.
Controller Options
Look for systems that include at least two controllers for multiplayer gaming. Some consoles allow you to use original controllers which adds to the authentic feel. If you plan to connect extra accessories, check port compatibility carefully.
Included controllers save cost and ensure immediate play without extra purchases required.
Build Quality and Design
Evaluate the materials and construction to ensure the unit will last over time. Nostalgic design can be a plus for those who value aesthetics in their setup. Lightweight builds are good for portability but may feel less premium than older units.
Durable build quality ensures the console survives daily use and handling.
Save Functionality
Some consoles feature built-in saving options to help you track progress on games. This is useful for long RPGs or adventure titles where checkpoints are rare. Check if the save points are stored on the device or require external support.
Built-in saving functionality provides convenience for long-term gaming sessions.
Price and Value
Set a budget based on the features you need and the number of games offered. Mini consoles with thousands of games are often cheaper than dedicated cartridge players. Consider the long-term value if you plan to expand your library later.
Compare price against game count and included accessories to determine real value.
Brand Reputation
Choose products from well-reviewed brands to avoid compatibility or software issues. Official consoles like the NES Classic offer reliability and curated game selections. Third-party units vary in quality so read recent user reviews for insights.
Stick to reputable sellers and check return policies to ensure a safe purchase.
Audio Features
Check if the console supports external audio output or has built-in speakers. Some units require you to connect to a TV for sound which can be limiting. If you have an audio setup, ensure the device supports your connection method.
Good audio features enhance the overall gaming experience and immersion.
How to Use and Care for Your Aftermarket Nes and Snes Consoles
Connect the console to your TV using the correct cable type like HDMI or AV. If using HDMI, simply plug it into a free port and power on the system. For AV, ensure the color-coded cables match the inputs on your display device.
If you have cartridges, insert them gently into the slot until they click into place. Navigate the game menu using the provided controller to select your desired title. Use the start button to launch the game and follow on-screen instructions.
Keep the console in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating during long sessions. Clean the cartridge slots regularly with a soft brush to avoid dust buildup. Always power down the unit before disconnecting cables to protect internal components.
